What is a dental crown? Do I need one?
A dental crown is like a cap that covers the entire visible portion of the tooth, protecting its remaining structure and bringing back its original shape, size, and color.
There are a few reasons why you might need a dental crown:
- Severe Tooth Decay
If decay has spread over a large surface area of your tooth, it must all be removed to stop further damage. In this case, a dental filling may not be enough to restore the integrity of the tooth. A dental crown is often the better option.
- Root Canal
After a root canal, your tooth needs reinforcement. A dental crown is the most common way to provide reinforcement and restore its functionality.
- Dental Implant
A dental crown is often the last step of a dental implant procedure. It covers the abutment and acts as your new, artificial tooth.
What to Expect
Our team will take impressions of the tooth or teeth that need repair. We will also create a temporary crown that you’ll wear while your permanent crown is being custom crafted by our local lab. After your tooth is prepped and ready to accommodate the temporary crown, we’ll carefully secure it in place.
At your follow-up visit, it’s time to remove the temporary dental crown, thoroughly clean the dental structure, and finally, place the new, custom-crafted dental crown. Dr. Amos will ensure that the appearance, spacing, and overall bite are perfect.
